49 million Nigerians can’t access m-money services – Investigation

49 million Nigerians can’t access m-money services – Investigation  October 05,2012 by Tunde Bello Investigation has revealed that over 49 million adult Nigerians do not have mobile phones and, as such, cannot immediately benefit from the mobile money scheme aimed at providing financial inclusion for the un-banked population in the country. Mobile money involves the transfer of money from one mobile phone to another without any need for a bank account. Latest figure on the website of the National Population Commission revealed that Nigeria’s population now stands at 167 million people. Enhancing Financial Innovation & Access, a World Bank-backed body that aims to deepen financial inclusion in the country, in its Access to Financial Services in Nigeria 2010 Survey, found that the country’s population comprised 82.3 per cent of adults or over 137 million Nigerians. Also, the National Bureau of Statistics, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria, c...

Broadband cost in Nigeria soon to be affordable for All

Image
ON the heels of the inauguration of the national broadband committee by President Goodluck Jonathan last month, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah has predicted that broadband cost could crash to the barest minimum if the Dubai campaign comes off successfully. Juwah however revealed that all the developments including the creation of the committee and other initiatives to make broadband available, were all geared towards this mission, adding that that paucity of investment in the broadband sector of the Nigerian telecommunications industry was also a strong reason why the country wants to showcase its broadband potentials at the ITU Broadband Forum 2012 in Dubai. According to Juwah, many corporate organizations, high net-worth individuals and even MDAs have had to depend largely on imported bandwidth by foreign operators until recently when MainOne, Glo 1 and NigComSat-1R began to offer broadband services, but even at that, the...

Two Young Entrepreneurs Get Their Hands Dirty With Urban Farming

Image
INNOVATION 3.0 BREAKING ALL THE RULES Nikhil Arora, 25, and Alejandro Velez, 24, didn't plan on being mushroom farmers. In 2009, during their last semester at the  University of California, Berkeley , Arora lined up a corporate consulting job and Velez nabbed one in investment banking. But a lecture on sustainability in a business ethics class changed all that. Their professor mentioned that he had heard it was possible to grow edible mushrooms in recycled coffee grounds. "No one had ever taken that idea and done anything with it commercially," Arora says. Intrigued by the idea, the students took to Velez's fraternity kitchen, where they set up 10 paint buckets of used coffee grounds fertilized with oyster mushroom spawn. Ten days later, they had sprouted their first crop. They conceived a business, fueled by a $5,000 prize from a campus innovation competition that allowed them to buy a van and rent a 200-square-foot warehouse. "At that point, that ...

6 Major Tech Innovations for 2012

These trends could make for huge opportunities--or huge disruptions to your business. Either way, they are ones to watch. We’re only a few months to the end of 2012, but several technology innovations are starting to show promise. Whether these trends will force you to change how you do business, or present you with entirely new opportunities depends on how willing you are to be an early adopter and take risks. You'll have to find room in your IT budget for these things, too. Whatever you do, keep these innovations on your radar: 1. Predictive technology Several companies have started talking about their research into predictive tech. The idea is that, as computers become smarter, they can analyze historical data to make predictions. For example, Ford is  using technology from Google  to develop a navigation system that predicts, based on your previous routes, where you want to go at a specific time of the day. For small business, predictive tech could help in small w...
